Moving in check list

Check the Inventory

You should get a list (with photos) showing the condition of the property. Go through it carefully and take your own dated photos, just in case there's a dispute later.

Take Meter Readings

Write down the gas, electric, and water meter readings as soon as you move in. Take photos too — this stops you being charged for what the last tenants used.

Test Everything

Try the lights, heating, taps, oven, shower, and smoke alarms. If anything isn’t working, report it to the landlord or agent in writing straight away.

Make sure your Deposit is Protected

Your landlord must put your deposit in a government-approved protection scheme within 30 days. They should also give you written details — chase it up if you don’t get this!

Sort Out Your Bills

Unless bills are included in your rent, you’ll need to set up accounts for gas, electric, water, and internet.

Keep Everything in Writing

Always use emails or messages to contact your landlord or agent. If you speak to them in person or on the phone, follow up with an email confirming what was said.
