Moving out check list

Before you move out

  • Check your tenancy agreement for move-out dates and deposit return arrangements. Not sticking to the agreement could delay your deposit return or lead to deductions.

  • Find out which deposit scheme is holding your money — you should have been told this when you moved in.

  • Start sorting items you no longer need — recycle or donate anything still usable.

  • Plan a cleaning rota with your housemates. Remember, the kitchen and bathroom usually take the longest!

  • Consider setting up mail redirection so you don’t miss important post.

  • Re-check the inventory and arrange a check-out inspection with your landlord or letting agent.

  • Clean the property thoroughly — the better the condition, the fewer issues with your deposit.

  • Notify utility companies of your move-out date to avoid being billed after you leave.

Move Out Day

  • Remove all rubbish from the property.

  • Take all your belongings — you could be charged if anything is left behind.

  • Take photos of each room as evidence of the property’s condition.

  • Take final meter readings and ask your utility companies for a final bill. Keep proof of payment — your landlord might ask for it.

  • Keep copies of important documents: emails, photos, your tenancy agreement, and final bills.

  • Lock up securely and return all sets of keys on time.

2–4 Weeks After Moving Out

  1. Haven’t heard about your deposit? Contact your landlord or agent to ask for an update. If you need help, your Advice Centre can support you.
