What is the Societies Executive Committee?


The Societies Executive Committee is the key decision making body for Societies, where they provide feedback and input queries from Societies within their nominated category. They also decide on the outcome of any new society applications that come in. Members are decided by application and cover each society category, plus two Open Spaces. 


Being on the Exec committee can contribute towards your HEAR awards. 


The positions on the Executive Committee are as follows:

  • Hobbies & Interests
  • Performing Arts
  • Faith
  • Cultural & International
  • Politics, Campaigns and Liberation
  • Academic & Employability x3 (one from each academic faculty)
  • Open Space x2


What are the key responsibilities and expectations as a society exec?


The key responsibilities of the Societies Exec include:


1. Attending Exec Meetings - Monthly meetings are the primary opportunity to provide feedback and represent the student voice. 

  • Deciding on the outcome of any new/adopting society requests 
  • Attend our monthly meetings, or send apologies in a timely manner if unable to attend
  • Meet and communicate regularly with Societies in your category
  • Review minutes from meetings and follow-up on any actions assigned to you
  • Gathering feedback on the society experience, highlight an issues or room for improvements, by meeting and communicate regularly with Societies 
  • Sit on disciplinary panels when required to deal with conflicts within societies


2. Gathering Feedback 

  • Meet with Societies within the respective category and gather feedback on their experience
  • Gathering feedback on the society experience, highlight an issues or room for improvements
  • Answering questions, helping with collaborations and promoting events in the society committee WhatsApp group 
  • Signposting to the relevant staff in the SU for any queries they are unable to deal with themselves


3. Getting involved, helping out and attending key events throughout the year: 

  • Attending and supporting key society-related events and training, such as committee training
  • Supporting the societies officer with society rewards, recognition and end of year Societies Awards.
  • Arrivals and Freshers Fayre set up/take down
  • Promoting events and things going on in the union, such as Society Awards etc
  • Attend and promote societies/union on open days 
  • Supporting and helping the societies officer with campaigns or events they have planned throughout the year
