The Welfare Officer of a Swansea University student group holds a crucial role focused on promoting a positive and supportive atmosphere within the group and addressing welfare and well-being issues that may arise among its members.

Well-being Advocacy: The Welfare Officer is a champion for the well-being and mental health of group members. They actively promote a positive and inclusive atmosphere, fostering a sense of belonging and support within the group.

Welfare Management: The Welfare Officer oversees welfare matters that may emerge within the group, whether related to group activities or external issues. They are attentive to the emotional well-being of members, offering a safe space for discussions and support. They should signpost support to members about available resources and services, helping them access appropriate assistance when needed.

Collaborate with Committee: The Welfare Officer collaborates with other committee members to create a positive and inclusive environment. They contribute to the planning and execution of group activities, ensuring that members' well-being is considered in all aspects. In particular they should contribute to the planning of sober socials.

Anonymous Feedback Surveys: To gauge members' well-being and gather feedback, the Welfare Officer may create, distribute and monitor anonymous feedback surveys.

Liaise with StaffIf there are welfare concerns that require intervention or support from the university, the Welfare Officer acts as a bridge between the group and relevant staff. They raise concerns, seek guidance, and ensure that the appropriate steps are taken to address the issue.

Compassionate and Approachable Presence: The Welfare Officer embodies compassion and approachability. They create an environment where members feel comfortable reaching out for support or discussing their concerns, and they maintain strict confidentiality when handling sensitive matters.

Crisis Management: In the event of a welfare crisis, the Welfare Officer takes a leadership role in ensuring that the appropriate support is provided. This may involve contacting relevant authorities, seeking professional help, and ensuring that affected members receive the care they need.

In summary, the Welfare Officer of a Swansea University student group is dedicated to maintaining a positive and supportive group environment while addressing welfare concerns that may arise. Their role requires compassion, confidentiality, and collaboration as they work to enhance members' well-being, connect them to available resources, and create a sense of community and care within the group.
